The leash line must be tear-resistant while remaining flexible so that nothing separates the surfer from their board. From the Competition thin leash (suitable only for light boards and small waves), to the Regular leashes (multi-purpose leashes for all types of boards and conditions) up to the Big Wave leashes (extra thick leashes for SUP boards or extreme conditions; these leashes are very rigid and therefore not recommended as all-purpose leashes for surfboards).
The length of the leash line should be determined based on the length of the board. The general rule is as follows: The leash should be indicated as being no more than 6 inches longer or shorter than the length of the board:
6 feet leash = 5.6 - 6.6 feet board length
7 feet leash = 6.6 - 7.6 feet board length
8 feet leash = 7.6 - 8.6 feet board length
9 feet leash = 8.6 - 9.6 feet board length
10 feet leash = 9.6 - 10.6 feet board length
